Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for visiting our website! Below is a list of questions that we commonly receive.

I just signed my child up with the Ch.I.L.D. Research Group. Now what?

Thank you for signing up! Once you've signed up online you should get an e-mail confirmation from our Research Coordinator. Your information will then be entered into our secure database which only our researchers have access to. When we are recruiting participants for a particular study, we will see if your child is of age for that study (for example, only 4-year-olds). If they are of age for that study, we will contact you and let you know some information about the study including how long it will take. If at that point you are interested in booking an appointment - we will book one in a time that works for you.

I signed up a while ago and haven't been contacted. Should I get in touch with you?

You don't have to - but we're always happy to hear from you!

Our studies all look at specific age ranges (for example, only 11-month-olds, or only 4-year-olds) and so sometimes your child might not be eligible for any of the current studies due to their age. Once we see that your child is of age for a study, we will get in touch with you and see if you're interested in having your child participate.

However, you're always more than welcome to get in touch with us and we can make sure that we have your most up to date information! Sometimes you may not have heard from us because we have outdated or incorrect information and haven't been able to get in touch.

So when in doubt, feel free to e-mail us at

I just booked an appointment. What should I expect?

The researcher that contacted you will send you an e-mail with their contact information as well as the details of the appointment. If requested, they will send you the directions to our building (Administration Building). You should expect to receive a confirmation phone call or e-mail the day before the appointment if you booked an appointment 3 days (or more) in advance.

If you are driving - On the day of the appointment, please pull up along the long sidewalk in our parking lot, that way the researcher can easily identify you, give you the parking pass for our lot and show you where to park (even if you have been in before, please pull up along the long sidewalk). The researcher will walk over to where you park, and will walk you into the lab. For directions to our lab, please click here.

If you are taking transit/walking - the researcher will wait for you along the long sidewalk in our parking lot and walk you into the building. For directions to our lab, please click here.

Once you are in the lab, the researcher will give your child ample free time in the play area. During this time, the researcher will go over consent with you (and will provide you with detailed information about the study). When your child is ready, the researcher will begin the study. Once the study is complete, the researcher will bring your child back to the play area and bring your child prizes for participating in the study. The researcher will walk you back out to your vehicle.

I've booked an appointment. Is there anything that I should bring to the appointment?

No, however if there is a comfort item that your child has you can feel free to bring it to the appointment (for example, a soother for your baby).

If you are arranging for a family member or a friend to bring in your child, we will send you a consent form ahead of time for you to sign and we will require that your family member/friend bring the signed consent form in at the time of the appointment.

What is the time commitment for a study?

Studies typically consist of a one time visit to the university and appointments are less than an hour. Most of our studies are very short (less than 20 minutes) but some can be longer than an hour. When you get contacted by a researcher, they will let you know the specifics for that study.

Do I have to pay for parking?

No. We will provide you with a parking pass to use for the appointment.

Can I bring my other kids along for the appointment?

Yes! We have babysitters that can watch over your children while your other child is participating in the study. Just make sure to let us know that you need a babysitter and we will be sure to arrange one for you!
